Every Mia profile is reviewed before it goes live, and a Verified badge means a member's selfie matched their photos. But no app can know everything about a person. These tips help you stay safe.
MIA DOES NOT CONDUCT CRIMINAL BACKGROUND SCREENINGS OF ITS MEMBERS.
Before you meet
- Take your time. There's no substitute for acting with caution when someone you haven't met wants to meet you. Keep chatting on Mia until you feel comfortable, and be cautious if someone pushes to move to another app quickly.
- Keep personal details private. Leave your last name, email, home address, phone number, workplace and anything else that identifies you out of your profile and first messages. Stop talking to anyone who pressures you for personal or financial information or tries to trick you into sharing it.
- Never send money, gift cards or crypto, or share bank details — no matter the story. Report anyone who asks.
- Look for the Verified badge, and consider a video call before meeting. The badge means a selfie matched the member's photos; it doesn't verify anything else, and anyone willing to steal an identity can fake a dating profile.
- Search them. A quick look at a name or Instagram can confirm they are who they say they are.
When you meet
- Tell a friend or family member where you're going, who you're meeting and when you'll be back.
- Meet in a public place with plenty of people around, get there and home on your own, and never agree to be picked up at home.
- Stay in control of your drinks and belongings.
- Trust your instincts. It's always fine to leave.
If someone you talked to is removed
When we remove an account, everyone who exchanged messages with it gets a safety alert in the app and by notification: the member's first name and, for fake profiles or scams, why. If you sent money or financial details, contact your bank right away and report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov. The FTC's guide on how to avoid romance scams is worth a read.
