Biometric Data Policy

Effective date: October 10, 2026

On Mia, verified members are shown only to other verified members. To be shown to them, you verify that your photos are really you, in one of two ways: a short live video check, or a selfie that a person on our team reviews. This policy explains what happens to your face data when you verify. It is part of our Privacy Policy.

What we collect

You verify in one of two ways:

  • Live video check. A few seconds looking into your phone's camera, in the app.
  • A selfie for our team. Instead of the live video check, you can send us a selfie in which you make a simple gesture that we choose (for example, holding up three fingers). A person on our team compares it with your profile photos. This can take up to 7 days.

Before either one, we ask for your written consent (a checkbox) and record the policy version you agreed to and when.

How it's used

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Rekognition Face Liveness analyses the video to confirm that a real person is present in front of the camera. One still frame from the video becomes your verification selfie. If the check doesn't succeed after 3 tries, a member of our team reviews the frame from your last try.

Your selfie is compared with the photos on your profile using AWS Rekognition to check that they show the same person. To get the Verified badge, your first photo and most of your photos that show a face must match your selfie. If they don't, a member of our team reviews your selfie. A photo with a face that doesn't match is hidden from other members until our team reviews it.

If you send a selfie to our team instead, only a person on our team looks at that selfie. It is not analysed by software and it is not sent to AWS: there is no video, no liveness analysis and no automated comparison. The person checks the gesture, compares your selfie with your profile photos and decides whether you get the Verified badge.

After you're verified — in either way — each new photo you add that shows a face is compared automatically, using AWS Rekognition, with your photos that matched your selfie or your earlier verified photos. If it doesn't match, it stays hidden until our team reviews it. If your first photo, or most of your photos with a face, no longer match, your Verified badge is removed and your profile is hidden until you verify again. The only purpose is confirming that you're a real person and that your photos are really you.

What we keep — and for how long

  • We do not create or store a face template (a reusable face "map").
  • Mia doesn't store the video. We keep one still frame from it — your verification selfie — which is handled exactly as described below. A selfie you send to our team is kept and deleted under the same rules.
  • We keep only the results: the liveness score, similarity scores for your selfie and photos, which way you verified and the gesture we asked for, whether each check passed, and when.
  • Your selfie is deleted immediately when verification is approved, whether it's approved automatically or by our team. If it isn't approved, it's deleted 7 days after the decision, or after 30 days if no decision is made. Any selfie still stored is deleted when your account is deleted.
  • In every case, face data is destroyed no later than the earliest of: the purpose being satisfied, or 3 years after your last interaction with Mia.

Sharing

We never sell, lease, trade or otherwise profit from biometric data. It is shared only with AWS, which processes it on our behalf to perform the liveness check and the comparison, or if the law requires it.

Your choices

You decide whether to verify, and which of the two ways to use. What you choose changes who you see on Mia and who sees you:

  • Once you're verified, you see verified members and they see you.
  • While a selfie of yours is waiting for our team's decision (up to 7 days), you can use Mia with other members who are also waiting. Verified members don't see you, and you don't see them.
  • If you don't verify, or a verification is rejected, your profile isn't shown to other members, and theirs aren't shown to you, until you verify.

You can withdraw consent at any time by emailing support@miadatingapp.com; we'll delete any selfie we still hold (your Verified badge may be removed, and your profile is then hidden until you verify again).
